Autodesk Recognizes BIM Talents in the 8th Annual Hong Kong BIM Awards 2014

Autodesk Awards Organizations and Students for Realizing Unprecedented Cost-savings, Sustainability and Efficiency in Projects with BIM

HONG KONG, July 17, 2014 — Autodesk today held the Eighth Annual Autodesk Hong Kong BIM Awards Presentation Ceremony at The Mira Hong Kong Hotel. The ceremony celebrated talented individuals, both at school and at work, for their innovative use of Building Information Modelling (BIM), bringing about unprecedented levels of cost-savings, sustainability and efficiency for projects in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industries.

 At the ceremony, Sr Hon. Tony Tse Wai-chuen, BBS, Legislative Council Member (Architectural, Surveying and Planning), celebrated with winning organizations and students who have made significant contributions to the AEC industries through BIM alongside Autodesk representatives. Awardees then presented their winning projects on stage and showcased how BIM has empowered them throughout their journey.

 “This is the eighth year for Autodesk to hold the BIM Awards, and with the Autodesk’s intention to incite “A Design-led Revolution” this year, marking a significant milestone in our effort to drive the proliferation of this important technology. It is crucial for us to persevere with our efforts to ensure the development of AEC industries in Hong Kong will not lag behind other countries in the Asia-Pacific Region. “As a global leader in 3D design, engineering and entertainment software, Autodesk introduced BIM to Hong Kong in 2002, and has since been a staunch advocate of the technology,” said Dr. Lee. “Each awardee here today has demonstrated their abilities to translate their talents into innovative ways of applying BIM in their projects. From increasing productivity to saving costs and improving development efficiency, the ways one can apply BIM on projects are almost endless.”

 

The West Kowloon Reclamation Substation project was the first CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power) green substation to adopt the BIM model in the project’s design. Situated in the West Kowloon Cultural District, the green power substation was required to blend in with its surrounding environment and faced many technical challenges such as small substation footprint available and restricted outlets power cables outlets. By adopting the BIM model during the project design stage, the project team was able to address and overcome the project requirements and challenges to produce a harmonious and efficient design. 

 Bearing the motto “Doing it right the first time”, C L Mak, Senior Substation Implementation Manager of CLP Power, said, “We have used BIM from the beginning of this fast track project. Electrical plant design engineers, high voltage circuit design engineers and architects have all used the BIM model to optimize the substation design.” Besides workflow and space optimization, and 3D visualization, the team used the BIM model to reduce conflicts amongst utilities and equipment, and enabling identification and mitigation of changes to works at the design stage.  This effectively keeps helps to eliminate abortive works during the construction stage to a minimum.

West Kowloon Reclamation Substation
 

For the ongoing Grade A Office Development at 14-30 King Wah RoadHenderson Land Development Company Limited (Henderson Land) aimed to enhance the qualities of building designs and long-term operations of this prestigious office tower. The project team opted to use BIM to enable faster decision making and achieve better quality of works. Well-versed with the tools, the team realized the project in a virtual environment through BIM, elevating the designs from the conventional 2D drawings, through a realistic 3D model with extra dimensions of time, cost and quality, which helped the team members easily visualize the entire project in a "6-dimensional" framework. Kevin Ng, Senior Deputy General Manager, Project Management (2) Department, Henderson Land, shared that time, cost and quality are the three key development considerations. To make the most out of the technology advancement, it warranted the project team's extra efforts to monitor these important parameters through a quantifiable means on the BIM-enabled platform.

Hong Kong Housing Authority (HKHA), as one of the winning organizations, was awarded for its efforts in “Bridging the Gaps with our Core Values – Successful Transformation of Revit Model to Enable Civil 3D/GIS/Revit Integration and Lighting Simulation and Rendering”. HKHA develop its workflow so that professionals of different discipline can work together to design, review and evaluate public housing development proposals. “Integrating and synergizing the Civil 3D, GIS and BIM helped the team eliminate clashes and mismatches between the Engineer’s site formation design and the Architect’s proposed General Building Plan that were sometimes found unexpectedly during the construction stage, saving the team from delays that could be both expensive in time and cost,” said Dr. Wong King-cheong, Senior Geotechnical Engineer, Housing Department. On the other hand, MEP engineers’ integration of BIM also helped the team to conduct richer lighting calculations by taking into account much more building information that was previously omitted from simulations.

To cope with the tight timeframe, MTR Corporation Limited (MTR Corporation) uses BIM at the early design stage for its Re-provisioning of Harbour Road Sports Centre and Wan Chai Swimming Pool under Shatin to Central Link project. Using BIM, the project team could further deploy an enhanced design management model, in which resources are expended upfront, in the design stage, which is expected to achieve reasonable time savings during construction. Mr. Vincent Chu, Design Manager – SCL (NSL) of MTR Corporation, said, “As it combines architecture, civil plus electrical and mechanical engineering, I would refer this as a “total architecture” solution”.  The team also exported information from the BIM model to carry out computer fluid dynamic simulations when designing the indoor swimming pool, preventing condensation from the pool.

The Architectural Services Department, Hong Kong SAR Government recently prepared two resource kits for Revitalizing Schemes – covering the Lady Ho Tung Welfare Centre and the Old Dairy Farm Senior Staff Quarters. With the help of BIM technologies, the Department was able to generate an interactive 3D model after surveying the historic buildings. “Heritage Information is not only an integral part of conservation projects, it must be accurate and kept up-to-date long after an intervention is completed,” said Kevin Li, Senior Architect, Architectural Services Department. Without an in-depth understanding of the site and the historic buildings, proposed developments could harm the site, undermining the heritage value and sustainability of the buildings. Models generated from BIM are not only free from errors of traditional 2D drawings, they maintain the required standards as well, augmenting the visualization and communication of information between the Department and its stakeholders.
